HISTORY
Kajano bred, Vade was born to a pair of typical Holdfolk, but ended up raised by them AND his eccentric uncle. His parents were a little dimwitted, and his uncle Gered a little crazy, but between the three of them, Vade... Well. Vade didn't grow up very balanced. But hey, who did? Vade was pulled between his father's stupidity, his uncles bizarrely masculine homosexuality, and his mother's severe depression and agoraphobia. It was a strange childhood, but Vade managed to blend in perfectly well with his peers, though he never invited them to his family's rooms. See, unlike Vade, they were not so able to blend in. They did low-level work around the Hold, not quite Drudges, but not too far off from that level of well. Crazy dimwittedness. Vade is privately convinced that he comes from a long line of inbreeding on his father's side, and has been convinced ever since he saw what happens to runners if they're bred too closely together too many times. The "inbred" gene just seems to have... bounced over Vade, to a point. Perhaps for all that his mother was rather unbalanced... OK, extremely unbalanced, it was her blood that saved him. After all, on THAT side of the family, almost everybody was a Harper, a Healer, a Dragonrider, or an otherwise accomplished Crafter. His mother being the exception.
However, that is not to say that Vade has never been known for... strange antics. By the time Vade was nine turns old, he was already politically aware. It's difficult to say how he caught on so quickly, but he did. He was even aware of what was going on in Crystal Waters Weyr. By twelve, he was spouting off limericks and poetry. In all, people always wondered why he didn't go off and join some sort of troupe, or even Harper Hall (though, they doubted he could read). He was the sort of teenager who would climb up on top of things just because he could, and then shout down to whoever passed by to scare them. Needless to say, he was scolded several times.
Finally, when he was twenty turns, however, they figured out a place for Vade to be. The tavern. Only as a bar tender would Vade be free to do what he wanted to a point, and now he hosts unofficial poetry and song performances by non-Harpers and amateurs. Sure, Harpers were welcome, but Vade rather enjoys the eccentricity of non-Harpers. Those folk from the Hall? They're much too serious with their work.
In the turns since he began working at the tavern, he's really rather made the bar his own, and in fact, when he was 27, the keys were handed to him as the original owner went off to retire. He still maintains the fact that the tavern is mostly for wines, but he's certainly opened the tavern up to a little more excitement and free-flowing goodness. Though, he hides said free-flowing goodness when the Lord Holder stops by. No good letting the Lord Holder think he was having FUN. Oh no, never FUN!
PERSONALITY
Vade? Vade is crazy. At least, that's what most Holders seem to think. Always spouting off a little "spoken word" he calls it (to which Holder's respond "all word is spoken") at spontaneous intervals and always encouraging Harpers to retune their gitars for a little fun. He loves music, but he often becomes bored with what Harpers have to give him these days (which means he would probably appreciate getting to know his cousins over in White Sands Weyr). He is eccentric and highly intelligent (a common trait in his bloodline, it seems), and will eagerly jump into any conversation he can in the tavern. He especially enjoys talking politics, and much of his poetic raving can be found to include big names such as Thaira, or X'cer, or Lord Holders from around the world, though he's usually more discreet and says something along the lines of "And the Weyr's Woman" or "And the Eastern Cold Lord" depending on what he's talking about.
Vade also has a more serious side, of course, but it's hard to reach that part of him. It's doubtful that anybody remembers his upbringing with his dimwit father and his insane mother, and he certainly doesn't talk about it much. Occasionally he references it in his crazy rants during his little amateur poetry-music fests that the Lord Holder isn't aware of (and in fact, most of the more conservative Hold is unaware of, it tends to pull in about a dozen people, many of which are traders), but even then, it's so brief that people can't really say whether or not the crazy man was pulling from his own experience.
For all that Vade doesn't look like the easiest shoulder to cry on, he really is. Vade is actually a rather sensitive guy, if eccentric and occasionally more boisterous and hyper than he can help. Having come from a non-unique background and grown into a unique adulthood, he has a wide range of experiences to pull from to share with people, to help them, and have compassion.
APPEARANCE
Kind of skinny, kind of tall, kind of strong, with a big head, a little neck and wide shoulders, Vade has all the natural look of some punk back on Earth. His hair is cut long in the back, and is absolutely shaved on the top, and while piercings are not all that common in a Hold, he certainly has one in his ear. Were he at the Weyr, he'd likely have a few dozen. At 6 feet, he doesn't tower over many people, but with his stomping boots, he does. They add another four inches. He special-ordered them from the official Tanner Hall through a friend of a friend of a friend. He still owes the middle-middle man a few Marks.
Generally seen wearing wherhide pants (tight and black) laced up along the legs and often no top at all, most people in the Hold generally do not appreciate Vade's appearance. "To the Red Star with them!" he says. Besides, he makes the best sweet mead in the area. Most of those "So-Called Real Vintners Who Can't Tell A Good Wine From A Bad Brew" are too caught up in wine for his tastes. Vade enjoys a good glass of wine, of course, but he also knows that he's better at the other arts of alcohol.
It seems that the only reason the Lord Holder even thinks of tolerating him is because it's true, Vade is an excellent brewer for anything that doesn't involve fruity grapes. He's made some excellent liquors that are only found in the down-stairs of the Nahoran Tavern, as well as in his own home, hiding under his bed... in a box that says "Wild Wher, Keep Out" in blocky handwriting.
