Vanech rubbed the back of his neck and twisted it, giving a sniff as he leaned against the wall of the Hold. Not far away Vanesk rooted on the ground, snuffling at something in the darkness. Though the Wher Handler had no idea what it was, he had an idea of what it smelled like, his Wher’s keen sense augmenting his own at least in a way. Far as Vanech could identify it, this was the remains of a tunnelsnake. He sighed and continued to wait, finally giving a shake of his head and a soft laugh, “Are you finished? We have more to patrol you know.”
The bronze looked up, blinking his great eyes at his Handler. He snorted, turned away, snuffling at the corpse one more time and then shuffled toward Vanech. The Beastcrafter turned and began to walk onward. They were coming to the end of their fourth round, and he was thinking of dinner. Vanesk had been edging all night, which put Vanech at unease. However, thus far they had not encountered anything untoward.
No sooner had he thought about that then Vanesk’s head snapped toward the darkness, his wide nostrils flaring as he leaned in that direction as well. Vanech felt the anxiety before he had a chance to turn. “What is it?” His voice dropped to a whisper and he wished not for the first time recently that he could speak to Vanesk mentally as the dragonriders could.
Then he heard the crunching noises, the snap of branches from something … or someone… running away from them. By the time Vanech registered what his Wher was reacting to, the creature was already bolting off toward the bushes and noise. Vanech gave a low whistle, summoning Lucky Lady to him as he ran after Vanesk.
The green fire-lizard appeared with only a quizzical chirp. Though she attempted to land on Vanech, his movements prevented it so she circled above him. Vanech concentrated, sending a message in images to ‘Lady, the intention for her to give it in-full if a report became necessary. For now she coasted upward, high above the pursued, seeking to follow what was going on at a safe distance.
