Name: H'lak, formerly Halak
Rank: Bluerider in Golden Glow Wing, Low Altitude Flight
Age: 28
Dragon: Blue Kobaleth
Fire-lizards: Brown Sid and blue Luon
Other Animal Companions: None.
Appearance: Black, cut short so that it doesn't get in his eyes or be a nuisance during thread that is already starting to be shot through with gray and green eyes don't make him particularly remarkable on Pern, although he stood out in the predominantly redheaded islands of his birth. He has a few scars that run down his chest from where Kobaleth claimed him on the sands. Although he was not the most athletic of boys back home, he has developed a good, strong body as a rider and filled out his tall frame. He is secretly glad that he hit puberty as a rider, strongly suspicious that if he had had any other kind of life, he would have always looked gangly and awkward. As is, he is a bit on the lanky side, but the rider's lifestyle gives him muscle and tone that keep him from looking like a perpetual adolescent with skinny arms and legs too long for his body.
Personality:
Very very quiet, H'lak often seems a little threatening and brooding, if one doesn't know him. This, however, is a front for a generally shy man who prefers to think before he speaks and likes to consider all sides of a situation before making a judgment. He generally has faith in humanity and likes people, but he prefers to observe, rather than act, despite the fact that this makes him seem aloof. When spoken to, his quiet, slow way of speaking can make him seem a little slow-witted, but he has learned, as have most riders, to disregard what other people think and never say something that he doesn't mean or hasn't thought about beforehand, considering himself to have an analytical nature. He does, however, enjoy startling people with a sudden wry joke or a comment on their conversation, especially when these people seem to have written him off as "slightly dumb". He tends to be more chatty with people he knows well and likes, which was why he chose voluntarily to transfer to a very small Weyr, where he would quickly know everyone.
He is highly addicted to Klah and is rarely seen without a mug somewhere nearby. He has been known to be a bit more irritable when klah is scarce.
History: H'lak grew up in the shadow of five loud, boisterous older siblings, the youngest son of Lakin, a former carpenter and shipbuilder of Huryen Island and Henna, who works in the kitchens of Carena Hold. When H'lak was quite young, his father was in an accident at the shipyards in which the man lost his right arm below the elbow and mangled his leg badly, giving him quite a limp. Having a large family and no way for the main provider always made things that much more difficult, and the family often had to pinch pennies where they could to make ends meet. Still, little Halak lacked nothing, especially not affection as he evolved in the tight-knit family.
It was a bit of a relief for everyone when he was Searched at the age of 14, since his parents considered that he would definitely better himself in life and having one less mouth to feed always made things easier. He didn't really think he would Impress, but he decided that he would try his best and that if he didn't succeed, at least he would have good stories to bring back to his family. Although rider life was very strange to him and he was quite nervous, he liked being a Candidate at White Sands Weyr, where he discovered the joys of klah, now that his mother couldn't forbid him from having it, and where the community was small enough that he managed to make good enough connections with people that he soon felt like he had a second family.
His doubts about being able to Impressed proved wrong when blue Kobaleth hatched raced at him, knocking him over and managing to scratch him a bit in his haste to reassure his Rider that yes, he, Kobaleth had chosen him and was never, ever leaving him ever again.
H'lak and Kobaleth decided to transfer to Great Cliffs a few Turns ago, after Great Cliffs sent some of their Candidates to stand at White Sands Weyr. They felt that in the spirit of fairness Great Cliffs should get something back, for their Candidates, and Great Cliffs sounded like the kind of home they could be happy in, despite its size.
Age: 13 Turns (gold Verillyth x bronze Terranceth)
Appearance: A mid-sized blue at 27 meters, Kobaleth is a very bright sky blue, patterned haphazardly with darker splotches that are more concentrated around his front, particularly his face, and less common towards his tail. His tail itself is uniformly sky blue. Basically it looks like he tried to open a container of royal blue paint and it exploded in his face.
Personality: Even at 13 Turns, Kobaleth is almost as exuberant as a weyrling and twice as happy. He rarely has anything negative to say about anything but Thread and is generally very bubbly, bouncy and happy about life. He fights thread with this same joyful enthusiasm and takes gleeful pleasure in everything from talking to his rider to sunning on his ledge. He is a nice contrast to his somewhat somber rider, enjoying contact with other dragons almost to excess and even with other humans.
Age: 2
Appearance: A nice klah colour with paler splotches around his muzzle and wing joints. Sid is a very small brown.
Personality: Hyperactive and curious, Sid wants to know everything and see everything all the time. He likes to bicker with his "brother" a lot, and is a bit of a show-off, never settling to fly in a straight line if he can't loop and twirl and prove just how good he is at flying. H'lak has been known to comment that Sid is the one who seems like he is drinking klah as if it's water. Sid also adores humans, not just his own chosen one, and has been known to "adopt" people every now and then for varying periods of time.
Age: 10
Appearance: A very dark blue, almost black, freckled along his back and tail with paler dots, almost a reverse version of Kobaleth.
Personality: Slow and steady, Luon is much like his rider, preferring to analyse the situation before acting. He likes shiny things and when he was younger was a bit of a kleptomaniac, but H'lak patiently trained him out of that. Luon now contents himself with hoarding pretty shells and stones that H'lak gives him and has been known to get hissy when anyone approaches his hoard. Unlike Sid, Luon is leery of people and can be a little tempermental, even with H'lak.
